Rugby: Skegness 1st XV 38 – 33 Bourne 1st XV
SKEGNESS played Bourne at the weekend in a ten try Division Cup encounter which would have been the game of the day for suspense and action.
Halliday had some early opportunities to kick penalty points to take the lead but his attempts passed by the posts in the cross wind.
Skegness began to dominate the forwards as Bourne clearly had the upper hand in the backs.
Most restarts in a game of rugby require the ball to pass through the forwards first and Skegness looked favourites. However loose kicking and loss of possession out wide gave the Bourne backs plenty of time to gather the ball and attack.
Lancaster scored early for the home side as they used a good driving maul to edge closer and closer from a now functioning line out. The prop celebrated with his team mates as Halliday converted to make the score 7-0.
Almost immediately Bourne drew level and also took the lead 7-14 as the back line punished the home side for poor kicking and handling. Halliday notched three points from a penalty in front of the posts. The score was 10-14 at half-time.
Skegness then surrendered another try as the centres opened up to allow the attacking strength of Bourne to score.
Dean crowned his first game for the blue and whites with a score. Divilly snaffled a loose ball at the back of the Bourne scrum. The scrum half off-loaded out of the tackle as the number eight ran near the posts to score. Halliday converted to make the score 17-21.
Straight from the kick off Bourne capitalised on a loose pass and Bourne ran seemingly unopposed to the try line to score. Skegness now faced a 17-28 score line.
Hummel scored out wide as the Skegness back line worked an overlap on the wing, good passing and decision making allowed the winger to crash over. Halliday again converted to make the score 24-28. A carbon copy error stabbed Skegness in the heart as again the Bourne back line scored immediately from the re-start. This could not be converted, but the score was now 24-33.
Cummings scored from a srummage five metres out as the defence looked to tackle the number eight. Confusion allowed the flanker to cross over the white wash. Again Halliday converted to make the score 31-33. Third time lucky as Skegness did not concede from the restart.
Dean scored the final try from a tap penalty five metres out. His strength and dynamism carried him over. Captain Halliday and eventual man of the match kicked another wide conversion to take the lead 38-33.
The seasiders ran down the clock and a fantastic encounter ended with the home side victorious.
