SPILSBY racer Rachel Smith headed off to Oulton Park, Cheshire, for the latest round of the Golf GTI championship, in only her second car race meeting since moving up from karting this year.
Having not been able to test at the circuit, Rachel made a good job of qualifying and learning where the track went, although she was placed at 23rd on the grid for both races.
After the long wait between sessions, the cars headed out onto the grid and, making a good start, Rachel held position on the first lap, narrowly avoiding being taken out by a spinning car in front of her.
This brought out the safety car for four laps which only left for two racing laps to the flag to finish the race, when she finished 23rd.
In race two, Rachel again made a good start and by lap two, she had made up four places, putting her 19th.
She knew holding onto this would be difficult, as her car seemed down on power along the straights, and whilst still in 21st place she was forced to retire from the race when a radiator hose burst.
It wasn’t quite the ending she would have liked, but she put in some more great track time and learnt another new circuit.
The team have got to investigate the loss of power issue and prepare the car for the next round on the famous Brands Hatch GP circuit in August.
