Talented young horse-riders from Alford are celebrating after their fledgling equestrian team won a prestigious regional show-jumping competition.

John Spendluffe Technology College students Laura Sanderson, 14, Emily Sanderson, 13, and Jemma Smith, 13, each put in strong performances to ensure the school took top spot in the National Schools Equestrian event.

Head of physical education Robert Thornalley said: “This is an outstanding achievement for the girls and we are very proud of their success.

“I hope that this will encourage even more students to join our equestrian team and we look forward to even greater success in the future,” he added.

The young riders journeyed to Bishop Burton Agricultural College in East Yorkshire to compete amid a field of 42 competitors from Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Emily and Laura jumped fast, clear rounds in the 90cm class to finish third and sixth respectively, which together with a good ride from Jemma earned JSTC third place in the team competition.

When the fences were raised to one metre, the girls scored highly again and although none secured individual rosettes they won the team competition.
