Disappointing weekend for Hicky at Donington Park

Louth Superbike rider Peter Hickman managed to salvage just one championship point from his two races at Donington Park on Sunday, after suffering technical problems with the Buildbase BMW and also still feeling the effects of his crash at Cadwell Park two weeks ago.

Despite his problems Hicky managed to qualify in fifteenth place for round nine of the MCE British Superbike championship but didn’t get away to the best of starts in the first of two races and found himself down in 20th place at the end of lap one.

But he got his head down and rode through his problems to move up into 17th place, homing in on the group of riders ahead when the red flag brought the race to a halt after Alistair Seeley’s Suzuki dropped oil on the track.

A seven lap dash to the flag was declared and Hicky set off well maintaining his position but he overshot the first corner and had to run across the grass at turn one on lap four and dropped to 20th place.

In the little time he had left he managed to overtake a couple of riders and took the chequered flag in 18th place, three places away from a point scoring position.

“After I ran off the track I knew I would not have time to make much headway but decided to carry on and try for a fast lap time as that sets the grid for the second race,” said Hicky.

Race two did go a little better for the Lincolnshire rider who clawed his way back from a bad start in 19th place to take the chequered flag in 15th at the end of the 20 laps to pick up just one championship point, which brings his total to 42 and places him 17th in the overall rider standings.

The next round is at Assen in Holland on September 23 when the series travels to Europe for the first time. Along with numerous other riders Hicky will have to learn his way around the unfamiliar circuit layout as quickly as possible in order to secure a good result in each of the two races.
