Black sets lap record at Rockingham Speedway
A SKEGNESS racing driver set a lap record in her latest race.
Amanda Black, who works as a PE teacher at Skegness Grammar School, competed in the third round of the Caterham Classics Championship at Rockingham Speedway.
Qualifying was wet and extremely slippery. Amanda qualified P8 for race one.
The weather brightened up and the track dried for the start of the first race.
From P8 Amanda realised that a good result was going to be hard work and a great challenge.
She made some excellent late braking moves in turn one and ‘Tarzan’ to overtake drivers.
With just over one lap to go Amanda had worked her way up to fourth position and was the fastest driver on the circuit. But, as she was preparing to overtake third place while coming out of the last chicane onto the banking, her front left lower wishbone snapped and the car slid to a stop.
Amanda was very disappointed not to finish the race as this has hampered her championship position.
She was third going into the weekend. However she was delighted to have been awarded the fastest lap and to find out that she had beaten the McMillian Caterham Classic lap record by 0.8 seconds.
With her wishbone fixed Amanda started race two from seventh position and ready for a battle. She slipped to 11th but battled back through the pack to finish seventh with another fastest lap.
Amanda said: “I am over the moon with a lap record and have improved a lot since driving here last year. I’ve proved to be one of the quickest on the grid.
“It’s a shame that it was a wet qualifying as my grid position seriously hampered my performance this weekend.”
The next round is at Anglesey. A circuit new to Amanda and she can’t wait for the challenge. She would like to thank the continued support from Mr Ward the Headmaster at Skegness Grammar School.
