A TALENTED young water-skier from Skegness recently took the gold medal in a national competition, just months after taking up the sport.

Richard Charles, 14, fended off stiff competition from across the country to be crowned British National Champion for the 2012/2013 season.

He said: “I love the sport and enjoy competition - I am on the water every weekend and every day throughout the summer holidays.

“Winning the gold medal at the national event is fantastic - I look forward to representing Britain at the European event where the competition will be even more challenging.”

Richard excelled in all three categories to finish 10 buoys ahead of the silver medallist in the National Cable Water-ski held at Liquid Leisure Park in Windsor.

The King Edward VI Humanities student only took up the sport in September 2011 after enjoying a friend’s birthday party held at Skegness Water Leisure Park in Ingoldmells.

The visit hooked him to the sport and he has been a frequent visitor to the park ever since, where he has welcomed the expert assistance on offer.
