Skegness Academy pupils to compete in Nottingham basketball festival

Skegness Academy pupils are set to take on the cream of young basketball talent from Nottingham and Derby at an event next week.

On Thursday the Nottingham Academy will host the annual Inter Academy Basketball Festival for seven secondary Academies sponsored by the Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust (GDFT).

And Skegness Academy students will be amongst the 160 pupils taking part.

Schools they will be taking on include the the Nottingham Academy, the Nottingham Girls’ Academy, the Weston Favell Academy, the Stanground Academy, the City of Derby Academy and the Kingswood Secondary Academy.

Each Academy will put forward 24 year eight and nine pupils.

Barry Day, Chief Executive of the GDFT, will open the festival which will also be attended by Andrew Sullivan, Captain of the men’s GB Basketball Team, who said that he was “thrilled and humbled to have been invited”.

The event is being held in the Wildcats Arena which is the only specialist basketball arena in the country.

Barry Day, Chief Executive of the GDFT, said: “The sport departments within our Academies have extensive expertise and enthusiasm for sport and this Inter Academy Basketball Festival is just one example of our commitment to providing competitive sporting experiences for students across the Trust.

Jamie Kilner, Director of Sport at the GDFT, added that: “Basketball is hugely popular across all our Academies and we have a basketball programme at the Nottingham Academy which is integrated into the school day.

“The festival will give pupils from other secondary Academies access to the highest quality facilities and an opportunity to play sport in a prestigious venue.”

The festival hopes to enhance the skills and technical development of the students, and to mak euse of the high level of basketball coaching available in Nottingham.
