Alford men’s 2nds, sponsored by The Centrepiece Spilsby, entertained Boston whose confidence would have been sky high following their demolition of Long Sutton last week.
Alford started brightly and a cool finish from close range by Paul Nickson was just reward. Alford continued to play good hockey but Boston got a goal against the run of play.
Although the teams went into the break all square it would have been a different story if it wasn’t for an excellent goal line clearance by Rob Thornally.
Alford took the lead again through a powerful Scott Masterman shot to make it 2-1.
Boston then took control for the first time and a goal from a short corner and a penalty flick earned them a 3-2 advantage.
Good defensive work from Mole Allenson kept Alford in the game and their tenacity paid off when another shot from Scott was charged down, only for the ball to fall to Shaun Smith who slotted home from an acute angle, much to the delight of the welcome home supporters.
“The whole team played really well and even though a draw was a fair result overall an Alford win wouldn’t have been undeserved,” said a club spokesperson.
“Big thanks to both umpires.”
