Alford turn up victory heat

Alford Ladies 1st XI 8,

Long Sutton Ladies 2nd XI 0

ALFORD played host to Long Sutton on a cold blowy morning, but the weather proved no stumbling block for an upbeat home side.

After the visitors started the game off their march up the pitch was soon broken down by Alford, who surged forward.

Once in the D right midfield player Tracy Le’Gate released a shot that was too strong for the Sutton defender and it was deflected past their own keeper for Alford’s first.

Within minutes Le’Gate doubled her own, and Alford’s, score when her shot needed no deflection to fly past the keeper.

The ever skilful Luan Burton caused problems all match and her nimble stick work could not be halted by the Long Sutton defence. Her run into the D and resulting shot swept into the goal for Alford’s third.

Long Sutton continued to close down the Alford attacks and were quick to rally round the Alford players.

However the running off the ball from the Alford players created space to punish the visitors.

Midfielder Le’Gate’s sizzling performance was capped off by a hat-trick as her shot from wide right flew past everyone in the D to nestle in the left side of the net.

Shortly before half time, having won a short corner, Captain Kelly Tuplin’s powerful strike converted for Alford’s fifth.

The second-half whistle proved no respite for Sutton. With the majority of the play now camped in the visitors’ half Alford struggled to find the space in the D as Sutton crowded the goal area as a form of defence.

Captain Tuplin continued the second half as she finished the first with a second conversion from a short corner for Alford’s sixth. Long Sutton continued to press for a consolation, however any breakaway attacks were ably dealt with by defenders, Helen Gray, Holly Boulton, Nikii Hind and Katy Murray.

Breaking down the Sutton attack, Nikii Hind released to Tracy Le’gate who swept the ball to Luan Burton, running from the left. With space in front of her she rounded the keeper and placed the ball in the back of the goal for Alford’s seventh.

Alford rounded off the forceful performance with a deserved goal for young Sophie Wood, whose persistence on the right post paid off when she was able to get on the end of a cross and force the ball over the line for Alford to win 8-0.

This was a convincing victory with great performances from Katy Murray, Kelly Tuplin and Luan Burton. However player of the match went to the on-fire Tracy Le’Gate.
