Hicky eyes a top six showdown

WILLOUGHBY superbike rider Peter Hickman picked up two more top 10 results at Brands Hatch over the weekend, and moves up to 10th place in the 2011 MCE British superbike championship, with four rounds remaining.

Free practice and qualifying didn’t go so well for the Lincolnshire rider, who made it through to the second session in 15th place.

He began the first of three races from a fourth row grid position but as the riders prepared to take their positions on the grid, a shower of rain delayed the start and the riders were given a seven minute wet practice session.

Tyre choice was a lottery, with most of the grid going with wet tyres, but as the race began the track dried quicker than expected and after completing the first lap, Hicky returned to the pits to switch to slick tyres.

By the time he got back out on track, he was two laps down on the leaders, and in 25th position. But with new rubber under him, he was able to post some fast lap times which earned him a second row start to the next race as sixth fastest rider.

Race two on Sunday began well for Hicky, who rounded Paddock Hill in fifth place on the first lap.

As the pace quickened, he dropped back to seventh and entered into a four rider battle for position.

He was circulating behind world superbike rider Joan Lascorz, who was proving difficult to overtake.

Although Hicky was faster, Lascorz blocked his path every time he went to overtake, and eventually Hicky crossed the finish line in 10th place.

Starting from row three for the final race of the weekend, Hicky maintained 12th place over the first half of the 20 lap race, before making a move forward, passing James Westmoreland for 11th position.

He then set about reeling in the group ahead, and passed Graeme Gowland and Jon Kirkham in one move on lap 16 to take up ninth place, which he held to the chequered flag.

Hicky moves up to 10th place in the overall standings, on 98 points, and 37 points away from claiming a place in the top six showdown.

With three races and 75 points up for grabs at Cadwell Park, Hicky will be hoping for three top results at his local circuit over the Bank Holiday weekend of August 27-29.
