Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League
Skegness Town 1 Cleethorpes Town Reserves 3
Brody Robertson showed why his goals have lifted Cleethorpes Town to the top of Division One of the North East Counties League with a hat-trick for the second string at Burgh Road.
He latched onto two errors early on and then slid home his third midway through the second half to send the visitors into the Challenge Cup semi-finals.
With the Cleethorpes first team without a game, the visitors had an opportunity to bolster their ranks.
Indeed, only three of the players who lined up at Burgh Road on Saturday started the league fixture between these two at the Linden Homes ground two weeks earlier.
Miles Fenty was the chosen keeper, the experienced Alex Flett partnered Reece Newell to strengthen the centre of midfield, and Robertson led the line up front.
Against such a strong outfit the Lilywhites could ill afford to gift the visitors with any foothold in the game, but two early errors were punished by the alert Robertson.
Jack Cotton pulled a goal back before the break, but Skegness were always second best against the 2012 winners of this competition.
On the hour the home side had a chance to level things when Daniel Cobb clipped the ball into the area, but Liam Papworth failed to get enough power on his shot and Cleethorpes survived.
It was their only real scare of the second half as the home side spent most of their time trying to get the ball back after giving away possession too cheaply.
Liam Parker and Ben Davison starred for Skegness, leading by example, but Cleethorpes were always in control of the game.
Town boss Nick Chapman was philosophical after seeing his side exit from the cup. “We were beaten by a better side today,” he said. “They were just a bit sharper in the areas that mattered.”
