SKEGNESS TOWN played Leicestershire Senior Premier League team, Sileby Town in front of a large crowd and ran out convincing 4-2 winners in their latest friendly match.

Town started well and Reid latched on to Howlands’ through ball after only five minutes to see the keeper pull off a great save down to his left.

Skegness continued to press with good efforts from Liles and Courtney going just wide and they looked in total control but were hit by a sucker punch after a mix up in the Town defence led to Sileby taking the lead,

Town came straight back at Sileby and stepped up the pressure, Reid and Liles again having shots saved by the Sileby keeper, but after 25 minutes town were level.

A ball swung into the box by Papworth was met by Foreman, to volley home at the back post.

Town’s midfield of Courtney, new signing Davidson, Nicholls and Papworth were working hard to close Sileby down and continued to press forward, and they got their reward just before half time, when a ball caused confusion in Sileby’s penalty area and Liles was the first to react to side foot home his first goal of the game, to give Skegness town a half time lead of 2-1.

The second-half saw one change made, Parish replacing Foreman to play alongside the impressive Akers at centre half.

Town were now in control of the game, reducing Sileby to rare break-away chances. Melton came on for Nicholls and five minutes later his cross was met by man-of-the-match Liles to smash home his second of the game and his fourth in his last two matches.

Town still continued to press and after good work by Davidson and Papworth, Reid broke clear only for his effort to flash across the goal, but the seasiders were not to be denied a fourth. This time Davidson’s pass found Skeldon and he kept a cool head to slot past the advancing keeper.

Sileby got their second with two minutes left, after a heavy deflection got the better of Robinson.

Manager Edgley was pleased with the performance, he said: “That was our fifth pre-season friendly, winning four and losing one and also scoring an impressive 19 goals.

“I believe we are still not the finished article and can continue improving, the more this new-look team plays together.

“We have a lot of young raw talent at this club who are getting better every game they play.

“We have a good balance to the team and they are playing some good attacking and entertaining football for fans to come and watch.

“We will make two more signings this week for the first team to strengthen us for the season ahead.”

Skegness Town will play their last pre-season friendly tonight (Wednesday) at home against Mablethorpe Town with a 7pm kick off.

They will start their new season with a home game against Market Rasen Town on Saturday, August 18, with a 3pm kick off.

The new look Skegness Town team would appreciate all supporters new and old to come and cheer the team on.
