Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League, 22/01/11: SKEGNESS Town returned to winning ways with victory over fourth placed CGB Humbertherm at Burgh Road.
The Lilywhites had to come back from behind to secure the win, their first for two months, which consolidated their second place in the league table.
It was a much improved second half performance that saw off the challenge of the Fulstow-based former champions.
Manager Barry Kilmore was pleased with the way his players responded after the interval.
“It was all down to the way we played in the second half,” he said. “I want us to battle and press like that throughout the entire 90 minutes.”
The inclusion of new signing Scott Trestrail enabled Kilmore to push skipper Damian Howland into midfield; teenager Brett Needham replaced Ryan Beresford at left back; and Michael Howard returned to the starting line-up. Adam Lyon and Arron Scutt dropped to the bench.
The Lilywhites took the lead after 12 minutes when Michael Gardner opened his account for the season.
Conceding possession in midfield led to Gary Nimmo’s equaliser midway through the first half and then Gary Kilday rounded off an excellent Therm move to put the visitors in front.
The seasiders responded with their second goal ten minutes before the break when Jamie Sleight found the back of the net for the fifth time this season.
So the home side had ended their goal drought, but worrying for the Skegness boss was the way they were beginning to leak goals. Only the crossbar prevented the visitors levelling just before half time.
But, despite being up against one of the league’s best strikers in Nimmo, the Lilywhites upped their game defensively and snuffed them out in the second half. The experienced Joby Gowshall in particular was commanding at the back for Town.
At the other end the seasiders created a number of half chances, but the three points were sealed when Liam Papworth fired home his sixth goal of the season from seven yards.
