Skegness Town 0, Cleethorpes Town 5

RUNAWAY leaders Cleethorpes Town proved too strong for a depleted Lilywhites at Burgh Road on Saturday.

Late withdrawals from Lee Orrey and Adam Broome added to Skegness’s woes following Lewis Cartwright’s absence through injury and Mark Thompson’s transfer to Boston United Reserves.

Dan Tuplin returned to the squad that lost at Grimsby, but the seasiders began the game with just one substitute.

And when new signing Aston Chase broke down, the home side couldn’t afford any more injuries.

They set their stall out to frustrate the visitors, defending deep and relying on the counter-attack.

Their strategy appeared to have merit as they restricted the previously prolific Owls to a handful of opportunities.

But the leaders took a 1-0 advantage into the interval thanks to a Jonathan Oglesby strike.

Trailing by just the one goal the Lilywhites were always in with a chance of damaging Cleethorpes’ title aspirations, but midway through the second period Luke Mascall doubled the visitors’ lead.

Five minutes later Oglesby fired home number three and Skegness’s resolved had been broken.

Substitute Renzie Lobendhan added a quality fourth goal, clipping the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area, before Ricky Belding completed the scoring ten minutes from time.

The result completed a league and cup treble over Cleethorpes’ seaside rivals and strengthened the Owls’ grip on the league.

Youngster Max Forman performed well for the home side in defence but they were always going to be up against it, particularly after the injury to Michael Gardner, whose withdrawal left them to complete the game with just ten men.
