Skegness United moved up to eighth spot in the Lincolnshire League following a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Ruston Sports.

With Danny Reid unavailable, Dominic Goddard came into the line up and Alex Kendrick replaced Archie Paul.

After United had avoided a third-minute scare as a ball whizzed across their six-yard line, they heaped the pressure upon the visitors - Kyle Howitt striking the bar and an offside flag ruling out Troy Lonslow’s finish.

Travis Portas was called upon to turn an effort round his post before Louis Saebe granted United a 15th-minute lead, driving a 20-yard free kick through the wall and into the net.

Lonslow then teed up Saebe again, but his strike was pounced upon by Sports goalkeeper McCleaf.

Again Portas was called upon to deny Rustons on the break, and that save was to prove important as Harry Ginniff doubled the hosts’ lead in the 43rd minute.

Saebe’s delightful through ball saw Ginniff make room for himself before finding the net.

Rustons ended the first half by striking the woodwork, and began the second on the front foot, forcing Portas into another save.

Ten minutes after the re-start, Ginniff’s cross was met at the far post by George Hobbins, who fired high into the net.

Rustons again struck the bar before United wrapped up the scoring in the 76th minute.

Another free kick from Saebe, this time way out on the left, eluded everyone - including keeper McCleaf - and settled in the back of the net.

United manager Gary Edgley said: “I’ve been asking the lads to pull together and for the first time this season they all did.

“It is taking longer than I had hoped to get all these new young players to gel together, but it’s now starting, and all the hard work being done by everyone associated with the club was rewarded with that performance and result on Saturday.”

UNITED: T. Portas, Howitt, Kendrick, Gray, Muirhead, Cunliffe, J. Portas, (Wolstenholme), Hobbins, Lonslow (Ginniff), Saebe, Goddard.

Men of the Match: Kyle Howitt, Corey Cunliffe.

On Saturday United are away at Wyberton in the Supplementary Cup (KO 2pm).
