Alford Ladies 1st 2,
City Of Peterborough 2s 0
BOTH sides started brightly but it was the visitors who seemed to be able to find a lot of space between their defence and attack.
Alford (pictured) left uncharacteristic gaps and were lucky not to concede early in the half.
Mid way through the half, Alford’s defender Kate Murray slowly edged her way along the sideline out of defence to find captain Chloe Bolland in midfield, who swerved through the Peterborough defence to find left winger Vicky Allen, who swept the ball past the advancing keeper for Alford to break the deadlock.
Alford continued to press the Peterborough goal and with a vast array of shots and flicks edging just wide or rebounding off both uprights, Alford were beginning to think that a second goal would never come.
Shortly before half time, Alford’s Tracy Legate was awarded a free hit just outside the 23 metre area and her strong shot straight into the D found an Alford player whose initial shot on goal was saved.
But as the keeper kicked the ball out it found Caroline Vickers on the edge of the D and her stunning strike flew past everyone to take Alford in at half time two goals to the good.
The second half saw more of the same and Peterborough would have felt unlucky not to have registered a score, but somehow the Alford defence were able to keep their quick attackers at bay.
Alford’s attacking line up looked doomed not to add to their score with their efforts continuing to beat the Peterborough defence but ending just inches passed the post.
Whilst still early in the season, Alford are satisfied with their start following promotion and after only four games they find themselves sitting second in the East league division 2NW.
