Thursday - AFTER losing 2-1 at the interval, Wainfleet scored another four goals in the second half in strong wind to make sure of victory and climb above Pointon in division one of the Boston and district league.
Wainfleet Utd 6
Pointon 3
Wainfleet had Dan Simpson in goal for Joe Perry who was injured in the warm-up season.
Wainfleet started in confident style. The home side saw striker Lee Johnson outpace his marker before his terrific drive was brilliantly saved by the Pointon keeper from a cross by Matt Broome. Then Phil Simpson fired narrowly over the crossbar.
In another attack, Wainfleet were awarded a penalty by referee Ian Brooks from which Royston Wilkinson hammered the ball into the net.
From this point Pointon came into the game and equalised when Pete Wilson scored with a drive into the far top corner of the net. However, Wainfleet fought back and restored their lead when Johnson broke away down the left flank and scored when he lobbed the advancing keeper.
In the second half, Wainfleet manager John Elsworth had to make a substitution when he sent on Ashley Rasmussen in place of the injured Wes Sutton.
After a few minutes Wainfleet went 3-1 up when Johnson outpaced his marker and scored with a hard drive past the advancing keeper.
Wainfleet keeper Simpson then pulled off a superb driving save before Pointon reduced the arrears. However, Wainfleet fought back and Rasmussen scored a glorious goal to put Wainfleet 4-2 up.
A few minutes later they went 5-2 ahead when Rob Jackson scored from a cross by Broome.
Pointon hit back and scored to reduce the arrears, but Wainfleet had the final word when Jason Carter scored from a cross by Andy Carter.
