Migrants in Skegness who find themselves isolated in the workplace are improving their employment opportunities by developing their language skills.

A new course launched in the resort last month has become so successful that three classes are now being run.

Wojciech Pisarski, chairman of the Skegness Polish Educational Association, said: “Skegness is now home to many migrants from Commonwealth countries and from the Eastern European countries that joined the European Union in 2004.

“They find it difficult to make friends in the wider community due to their poor grasp of English and working alongside other Eastern Europeans in fields, factories and local businesses.

“The future for them is uncertain with Brexit - farmers are already saying there is shortage of workers.

“But many want to stay and become more integrated in the community.”

Magdalena Piatek has a masters degree in art but works in the holiday industry.

She said: “I want to improve my English to feel more confident. The work situation in Poland is not good and I want to stay. Maybe one day I will paint again.”

WHERE TO FIND LANGUAGE CLASSES

Two language classes are being held at the Surestart centre in Brunswick Drive, Skegness.

Courses are being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which will lead to an intermediate course leading to a qualification after Easter.

Another course will also start at the association’s Children’s School on Saturday afternoons at Richmond School. Further, more advanced courses are planned in the future in English and in British citizenship.
