HERITAGE - The History of Hanson’s windmill was the subject at the Burgh Heritage meeting last Monday.
Guest speaker Margaret Southward, who with her husband, is the owner of the mill, spoke about the history of the mill, which was built in the 1800s on the site of a former post mill.
There was also a bake house at the mill and, as well as bread and cakes, eggs were also sold. One of the pictures on display depicted chickens strutting about in the grounds.
In 1938 the four sails were removed and in 1964 some of the machinery was taken to Brixton mill in London, where it is still in use today.
In the late 1980s the mill was rebuilt to incorporate a dwelling.
Mr and Mrs Southward purchased the property in 1992 and last year a fibre-glass cap was installed giving the mill a more traditional look.
One of the members recalled visiting the mill as a child in the 1930s to buy cakes.
Also on display were some record books in beautiful copper plate writing, dating back to the 1920s.
The vote of thanks was given by Norman Barker.
At the meeting on Monday, February 18 the subject will be Butlins’ Past, Present and Future. The speaker will be Chris Baron.
Meetings are held in the Windmill Tea Room at 7.30pm.
