Skegness school reassures parents over Scabies outbreak

Skegness Junior Academy has confirmed “a handful of pupils” have the condition after a worried reader contacted the Standard.

Miss Vicky Hardwick, deputy principal at the Skegness Junior Academy, said: “We have a very small number of pupils at the academy who have Scabies.

“Scabies is a skin condition that is usually spread through a prolonged period of skin-to-skin contact with an infected person – it is unlikely that it will be transmitted through brief physical contact, such as shaking hands or hugging.

“We are taking the matter seriously and have taken advice from the school nurses and the local GP practice.

“We would like to reassure parents that the professional advice we have been given is that once pupils have been treated, they are perfectly safe to be in school as they are no longer contagious even though the itching and skin rash may last for several days.”
