STUDENTS from Skegness Grammar School are set to embark on an expedition to Borneo next summer but in order to do this, the students need to raises thousands in sponsorship.

The ten students will be taking part in a four week adventure which will include community development work, wildlife conservation and more where each will need to raise £4,000 communally and £3,800 in order to take part in the trip.

As part of the month’s experience, students will also have the chance to undertake a PADI open water diving course.

One student said: “This expedition is extremely important to me because I feel that I will acquire and develop many important life skills such as leadership and team-working skills, traditional construction skills and techniques needed to teach English to the local children and the many skills involved in living in the jungle and as part of a small island community and off the coast of Borneo.

“I am particularly looking forward to helping the local communities in the rural district of Sabah, working with the wildlife of the Borneo rainforest and helping to preserve the forest and the other vulnerable habitats in the area, as well as experiencing a new culture and language.”

The students have set up a fund-raising committee which has already arranged a series of events.

On Saturday, March 17 the Borneo Expedition Fund-raising Committee staged their first event in the form of a sausage, mash and gravy dinner, then a pub quiz and raffle and impromptu auction at the Links Hotel in Skegness.

The evening was a great success which cost just £5 per ticket.

Over 70 people attended and the fund-raising committee made a healthy £445 toward the cost of the Expedition.

Future events over the Easter Break involve a group of students undertaking a sponsored walk over 50 miles of Hadrian’s Wall and a giant Car Boot Sale on the car park in Skegness Grammar School on April 28.

Cars will be allowed in from 9am and the sale will begin at 10am and close at 3pm, everybody is welcome.

The committee have also arranged for a textile bank to be placed in the grounds of Skegness Grammar School. The bank is there to recycle any textiles, old clothing, and pairs of shoes or handbags.

Future fund-raising events are under discussion for later in the year such as an Indian buffet and pub quiz night, and a Greek Meze (meal) and pub quiz to take place at other venues within Skegness.

For information about any of the events, such as how to sponsor a student on The Hadrian’s Wall hike, or for further information about the expedition please contact the Chairman of the Fund-raising Committee at steve.walker@ljfs.lincs.sch.uk. or Miss D Butler at Skegness Grammar School.
