A shark that had holidaymakers refusing to go in the water at Skegness after a beachgoer photographed it on the shore was ‘harmless’.

Stephen Gilson shared a photo of the common smooth-hound shark on social media and said: “Deffo not going in the water now”.

They are not very big and don’t attack people

However, according to Cheryl Yeadon of Skegness Natureland the shark is common to British waters and harmless.

She said: “They are common to British waters and are all around the coast and always have been.

“They are a good looking shark, though, and so look like an exotic shark.

“We used to have them in the tanks and everyone loved them.

“But they are not very big and don’t attack people. I’ve never known it to happen.”
