PUBLICLY funded theatres should be affordable for community drama groups to hire, the Mayor of Skegness has said.
Coun Mark Anderson made the comments after learning that Skegness Playgoers had been ‘priced out’ from hosting its annual play festival at the East Lindsey District Council owned Embassy Theatre.
Speaking at Wednesday’s Skegness Town Council meeting he said: “The Embassy was built with public funding so the community should have the benefit of performing there.”
Playgoers was very nearly forced to cancel its latest annual festival because of the cost of venue hire, marking an end to 63 years of cultural heritage in Skegness,
Thankfully, Butlins offered its Crazy Horse venue to the group free of charge and so the festival was saved.
