A lucky air cadet enjoyed a trip to remember on Lancaster Bomber ‘Just Jane’ thanks to the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire Tony Worth.
Mr Worth received the offer of a ride down the runway on ‘Just Jane’ at the county’s Poppy Appeal Launch at Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre in East Kirkby.
However, he generously offered Mablethorpe Air Cadets member Cdt G Lippolis the chance to take his place as a reward for the group winning the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet Award.
Cdt Lippolis was chosen for the ride by all of the other cadets for his outstanding performance in all areas of the cadet organisation including parades, community work and sports. He has represented the unit at local and regional level in hockey and athletics.
He said: “I can’t believe it, it is my first ever time in an aircraft. It is an extremely kind gesture and I am so pleased and grateful for the experience.” ‘Just Jane’ taxied around the runway at East Kirkby where Cdt Lippolis sat in the cockpit as he picked the highest number for his chosen seat. Before the taxi ride he had a tour around the Lancaster where he learned about the history of the magnificent aircraft. After the run he had the opportunity to tour the inside of the plane.
Cdt Lippolis added: “It was a tight squeeze getting into the gunner position at the rear of the aircraft although it was incredible to sit in the seat of a gunner. It really did bring home how it must of been for the servicemen during The Second World War and I will remember this experience for the rest of my life. I would like to say a big thank you to Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire Tony Worth for this unique opportunity.”
Squadron Commander WO Scott Gardiner said: “It is with sincere gratitude that we would like to thank Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire Tony Worth for his kind donation.”
