The owner of a prominent Skegness site, which has lain barren for more than five years, hopes to begin work on a multipurpose leisure facility within three weeks.

Taj Bola says the four storey complex proposed for the Grand Parade site will be ‘modern, colourful and looking towards the future’.

Following concerns raised locally that the resort’s range of attractions is too limited, Mr Bola claims this development will enhance the offer for visitors and residents - and believes his inclusion of an ice rink will prove particularly popular.

He said: “The rink is a very key part to the proposal and will put Skegness head and shoulders above many other towns in the area.

“It will also provide something for the town’s youth to take part in other than bars and clubs.

“It’s all about balance - we need bars and clubs but we also need more for the youth to do.”

The ambitious project will also feature a ‘youth zone’ containing a juice bar, seating space and games area, offering youngsters a ‘safe environment’ to enjoy themselves.

Other attractions planned for the site include two nightclubs - one of which will be a 70s and 80s themed venue for over 25s and the other a more contemporary affair.

Mr Bola’s neighbouring LA Cafe nightclub will be rebranded as a ’high class’ cocktail bar serving the most ‘exquisite’ drinks, to avoid saturating the market with late venues.

The upper floor will be a large food court, offering a diverse range of cuisines to appeal to all tastes and there are also plans to involve local breweries in a day-time pub, earmarked for another storey.

With more than five years elapsing since the former Fat Louis nightclub was levelled in 2007, Mr Bola says he appreciates the public concern about the lack of movement on the site, but promises ‘this will be the year.’

“A lot of people are despondent because they’ve not seen anything going on and there are rumours that it won’t happen, but rest assured, this will be the year.”
