A Wainfleet family have been left feeling like extras in their own version of Jack and the Beanstalk after sunflowers their daughter planted grew to colossal proportions.
Elizabeth Brown’s daughter Grace, 11, has planted sunflowers at the family’s Wainfleet home before - and in the past these had grown to respectable heights of seven feet tall.
But this year’s plants far and away outstripped those heights, and now clock in at 14 feet tall and climbing.
Elizabeth said: “we’ve planted sunflowers before but we’ve never had any grow quite as tall.
“We’ve been joking that they are sunflowers from something like Jack and the Beanstalk.
“They just kept growing and growing and growing.
“Grace is ecstatic about it. We never expected anything like this when we put them in.
“Anybody who has come round to our house has gone, ‘whoa’, when they’ve seen them.”
Astonishingly, Grace’s green-fingered success is the result of nothing more than simple watering of the sunflowers.
