VIDEO: Skegness woman in serious condition after house fire in Vernon Road in Skegness
AN ELDERLY woman was in a “serious” condition in hospital this morning (Tuesday) after a fire broke out in her home.
Four fire engines rushed to Vernon Road, Skegness at approximately 7.27am after the alarm was raised. Nearby neighbours saw them break the front window of the two storey house and attempt to get through the door.
Moments later, firefighters were seen carrying a lady from the house and she was taken by ambulance to Boston’s Pilgrim Hospital. The 72-year-old woman was later transferred to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Hospital.
One neighbour said: “I was woken up by the sound of the fire engines as I was on nights. I’m not sure what happened, I think they are investigating the cause.”
Another neighbour opposite the home, said: “I heard the windows being smashed and the fire brigade trying to get in, then 10 minutes later, they came out with a body in a night gown.
“It was early, about 7.30am and I’ve think the lady is disabled and uses a wheelchair.”
The blaze caused severe damage by fire to 50 per cent of the living room, and severe damage by smoke to the remainder of the house.
Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue this morning said it believed the cause of the incident to be carelessly discarded smoking materials, despite other suggestions circulating the town.
It is thought the family of the injured woman, including her son who is also believed to live at the property, were out at the time.
The British Red Cross were on hand to support the family and the fire and emergency services.
Anita Moore, service coordinator for The British Red Cross at the scene, said: “We assist with fire and emergency support in both flooding and fire incidents,
“We help the family effected with emotional and practical support and the extended family of the injured woman have just left.”
