VIDEO: Skegness beacon lit to mark 60th anniversary of North Sea floods
The beacon on the beach in Skegness was lit this evening (Thursday) as remembrance services continued across the area to mark the anniversary of the devastating coastal floods of 1953.
Forty-two Lincolnshire residents died, and a further 2,000+ were killed elsewhere in England, Scotland, Belgium and the Netherlands, after unusually high spring tides, strong winds and low air pressure created a terrifying storm surge on the night of January 31st and February 1st, 1953.
Services have been held across the region today to mark the terrible night that the sea rose up and drowned the land and remember the many who perished in the frigid waters.
As well as events in Mablethorpe earlier in the day, a memorial service was just drawing to a close in St Matthew’s Church in Skegness at the time of writing.
Earlier, the Bishop of Lincoln also blessed the sea defence in Skegness shortly before a procession of local dignitaries and mourners made the short journey to St Matthew’s for the start of the service.
As the memorial event was getting underway, the Young Firefighters and Lincs Fire & Rescue members lit the beacon on Skegness Beach to mark the anniversary (see video).
