UPDATED: One dead and two seriously injured in Alford car crash

A WOMAN has died and two other people seriously injured in a catastrophic car crash near Alford.

Two vehicles travelling towards each other on the A16, London Road, at Driby Top, collided head on at approximately 2.45pm today.

East Midlands Ambulance Service’s incident officer Steve Pratten described the scene as ‘absolute carnage’.

The woman in the front passenger seat of the car heading towards Skegness, thought to be in her late 30s or early 40s, was confirmed dead at the scene.

The driver of that vehicle, described as being a similar age to the woman, was flown to Hull Royal Infirmary with injuries described by paramedics as ‘life threatening’.

A three-year-old child who was strapped into a booster seat in the rear of the car appeared uninjured but was taken to Grimsby Paediatric Trauma Ward as a precautionary measure.

The casualties are thought to be a family of foreign nationals living in the Skegness area.

The sole occupant of the other vehicle heading towards Louth, a woman in her mid 20s, was also taken to Hull Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

Fire crews, paramedics, first responders and police all attended to the injured as promptly as possible.

Firefighters removed the roof of both vehicles and all occupants, injured and deceased were removed within half an hour.

Mr Pratten added: “The interagency response worked speedily and very well together.”

Rumours that an additional child was in one of the cars prompted an extensive search of the surrounding area but no one else was found or thought to be involved.

The road remains closed and traffic is being diverted via South Thoresby and Aby.
