SWEET sixteen can be a momentous milestone in a girl’s life, as her transition to womanhood begins.

Whereas some choose to mark the occasion with lavish parties, designer dresses and expensive presents, two twin sisters from Alford have opted for a more altruistic method of celebration.

Leonie and Colette Deswick-Eisele haven’t asked for any fancy soirees and don’t expect to be showered with gifts, instead, the generous siblings will be hurling themselves 15,000 feet from an aeroplane to raise money for teenage cancer sufferers when their big day arrives.

Their mother Angie said: “I think it’s completely out of the mould of many of today’s teenagers and it makes me very proud that they have chosen to do something for charity rather than themselves.

“They feel very lucky to be healthy teenagers and want to help others in a similar age group who are less fortunate.”

When the twins turn 16 on September 2, they will travel to Hibalstow to complete a sponsored skydive, in the hope of raising £1,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Although this will be their first skydive, Angie has explained that they have always been an adventurous pair.

She said: “They would always be the first in line for funfair rides that would leave others quivering with fright.”

The Queen Elizabeth II Grammar School students chose the charity after hearing a speech on the horrors of teenage cancer at their school.

With a little help from their sisters Hannah, 17, and Kitty, 10, they have already collected £400 by selling cakes, painting faces and washing cars in
anticipation of the big
jump.

They have also organised a pub quiz at the Anchor in Alford and would like to hear from any businesses interested in donating prizes for the event.
