Twenty new jobs for town’s Poundland site

Former M&S unit in Lumley Road, Skegness will be reopening as a Poundland on August 2.

Former M&S unit in Lumley Road, Skegness will be reopening as a Poundland on August 2.

SHOPPERS will be quids in as a pound-chain has announced that it will be opening in Skegness, creating 20 new jobs.

Back in March the firm had denied rumours that it was due to move into the town.

But now it has confirmed it will open a new store on August 2 on Lumley Road in the former Marks & Spencer site.

To kick off the opening, there will be a family fun day on Saturday, August 4, when Poundland will be giving out £1 vouchers from 10am, which shoppers can exchange for anything.

The family fun day will offer shoppers plenty of ways to win Poundland goodies and they can take part in the ‘Poundland Lucky Numbers’ where £100 worth of vouchers will be given away throughout the day.

“There will also be an in-store DJ and entertainer who will be giving away balloons and sweets and getting the crowds excited,” said a spokesperson.

The Skegness branch will join the 400 plus stores nationwide selling an array of products at just £1.

Poundland’s trading director, David Coxon, said: “We are delighted to bring our unique proposition to Skegness.

“Poundland offers exceptional value on top branded products to over four million customers every week. The £1 price hasn’t changed since we opened our first store 22 years ago. Our current customers love us and we are sure the Skegness shoppers will too!”

Glenis Brown, Chairman of the Skegness and District Chamber Commerce, said: “It is good news for the town and I am so pleased to see that site filled.

“We are quite lucky in this town and it can’t be anything more than excellent news to hear of the jobs.”

When the rumours of Poundland’s arrival in Skegness first surfaced back in March local figures expressed fears that the town was already too full of ‘cheap pound’ and ‘charity shops’ and that the town should have more of a ‘balance’.

But Mrs Brown thought Skegness couldn’t afford to be choosy and it was “good news that businesses are wishing to open.”
