Tumour fighter Carol set for huge marathon

An inspirational Skegness woman who has battled a potentially life-threatening brain tumour is about to tackle one her toughest challenges to date by running the London Marathon and in the process – raise money for an important children’s charity.

Dedicated runner Carol Silverwood and founding member of The Savona Striders, will pound the streets in London, joining thousands of other competitors on April 21, despite suffering with continuing back troubles and balance issues as a result of her tumour which was removed a number of years ago.

Carol has actually taken part in the marathon before but says the support and guidance from her members at The Savona Striders, one of Skegness’s newest running clubs, will really help her complete the 26.2 miles on the day, as well as boost funds for Children With Cancer.

“I was lucky when I had my operation to remove my brain tumour which could have left me in a wheelchair or worst still, so what better charity to support than one which helps children who have been diagnosed with cancer,” said Carol.

“You never know what life holds for you around the corner which is why I approach life full on and want to help everyone reach their goals and dreams,” added Carol.

The mother of four and Savona Hotel owner, has been training several times a week in the hope of gaining a good time on the big day but she also hoping to raise around £1,000 for the charity.

“If I could raise anywhere near to that, then I would be over the moon and so grateful to everyone who supports me,” explained Carol.

At the time of her tumour discovery, while working as a former fitness instructor, it was then that Carol fell and broke her ankle, not realising why her balance was out of sync or her hearing. But her mother, argued that her daughter should have a scan just before one Christmas.

To their horror and disbelief, thy found a tumour the size of a man’s fist which was pressing on her spine.

Brave Carol then had to endure a 15 hour op and was told, medics had never removed a tumour so big and that close to a delicate area.

Despite her ordeal and being left with a partial facial paralysis and part of collapsed vertebra in her spine, Carol has completed many challenges over the years including climbing; Ben Nevis, the Three Peaks Challenge and many local running events.

“I just wanted to prove I could do it despite my illness and you’ve got to keep a positive mind,” add Carol.
