TWIN sisters from Alford celebrated their 16th birthday by becoming the nation’s youngest skydivers, raising more than £2,000 for teenage cancer sufferers.
Whereas many youngsters celebrating their sweet 16 seek expensive gifts and lavish parties, Leonie and Colette Dewick-Eisele opted for a more altruistic way to mark the occasion.
The Queen Elizabeth II Grammar School students recently leapt 15,000 feet from a moving plane as part of a series of fundraisers which netted £2,154 for the Teenage Cancer Trust, with more donations expected to follow.
Their proud mother Angie said: “The event was amazing, lots of family and friends were there to support them. Originally they had a goal of reaching £1,000 but have exceeded that and have reached a total of £2,154, with a little more to still come in.
“Not only did they reach such a fantastic sum of money they also became the youngest skydivers in the UK. The girls cannot believe the support they have received from family, friends and local businesses, without whom this would not have been possible.
“We are very proud of them, they have worked hard at raising the money. They would like to thank everyone who has helped them along the way.”
The charitable siblings decided to support the charity after hearing a speech on the horrors of teenage cancer at the school.
With support from their sisters Hannah and Kitty, they collected £400 in advance of the big jump by selling cakes, painting faces and washing cars.
On the big day, the twins visited Hibalstow to complete a tandem skydive attached to an experienced professional, while singing Happy Birthday to each other on the descent.
Spurred on by the success of their charitable work, the girls have decided upon a similar fundraiser to mark their birthday next year.
Angie added: “They hope their donation to Teenage Cancer Trust will help those teenagers with a terminal illness and they feel very lucky to be healthy.”
The Teenage Cancer Trust is a UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and survival chances of the thousands of young people afflicted with the disease.
