Skegness Carnival Parade prize mix-up
Alive and Kicking's Tina Mellors receiving the trophy for the best voluntary organisation float in this year's Skegness Carnival Parade.
THE rightful victors in this year’s Skegness Carnival Parade best float competition had their moment of joy tarnished by a prize-giving mix-up.
Skegness based charity for adults with learning disabilities Alive and Kicking were judged overall winners for their pantomime themed float before Sunday’s parade began.
But many of the group’s members were unaware of their victory until the following day as two stilt walking performers were mistakenly awarded the trophy and prize cheque and left before the error had been noticed.
When the charity won last year’s competition, chairman Tina Mellors said her members had been ‘over the moon’ and she is outraged that they were robbed of that joyous occasion this time round.
She said: “It means a tremendous amount and they put an awful lot of effort into it, it’s like an Olympic gold to them.”
Mrs Mellors also said it would be the ‘lowest of the low’ if someone had deliberately deprived the members of their moment of glory.
Andrew Blackamore, who was one of the stilt walkers, has denied such accusations, claiming it was an honest mistake, which he never intended to cause such ill-feeling.
He has apologised for the upset caused but insists he never pretended to be part of the Alive and Kicking float and only realised the error after the event, having signed to accept the prize without paying it proper attention.
The Skegness Carnival Committee cancelled the cheque and presented Alive and Kicking with a replacement trophy to ensure they were not deprived of their rightful prize any longer.
The victorious entrants in each of the other sections are as follows:
Fancy Dress Under 10: Precious and Angel with Gina Stewart.
Fancy Dress Over 10: Snow White and the Two Dwarves featuring Karen Lennon and her twin sons.
Theatre Groups: Global Twirlers and Majorettes.
Advertising Trade: Skegness Pier’s Wizard of Oz themed float.
Voluntary Organisations: Alive and Kicking.
Novelty Section: The Lost World Adventure Park.
Veteran Transport: Boston Veteran Bicycling Club.
