Skegness 10k race event postponed amid route safety fears

Plans for Skegness’s first 10k race have been postponed due to safety fears concerning the route.

Organisers of the town event, set for March 24, were forced to halt the day after a meeting raised issues and an alternative course could not be found in time.

In a statement, Skegness Carnival Committee, said: “A meeting was held to discuss suitable alternatives during which amicable guidelines were laid down for a safe and secure option.

“The event organisers decided that in light of the lateness in the day to progress, it would be better to cancel the event planned for 2013 to allow more time to prepare and deliver a more suitable and acceptable future event.”

During a meeting, held yesterday, (Thursday, January 17), with the committee and Lincolnshire County Council Highways, possible issues with traffic along the initial route posed fears which left all no choice but to cancel the event.

Kris Bell, organiser and Skegness Carnival Committee, said: “It was just felt the time left to rearrange was too narrow and it was disappointing but we had to postpone this event.

“It would have been the first one of its kind for many years in the town and it was hoped that this out of season event would have drawn more visitors to the town.”

Mr Bell was hopeful that the event would be rearranged before the end of the year but it would not be during the tourist season.

“We are gutted over the fact we had to postpone it but at the same time, with our events in general, we are dedicated to putting on safe enjoyable days and it was just felt it would be rushing it and we wanted to deliver something that was acceptable.”

All the money paid for initial registration has been refunded to each applicant, Mr Bell claimed and the committee were looking forward to rebooking the event and said it would ‘no doubt be fantastic’.

New Skegness running club, The Savona Striders, which has been training hard for the event, said it was ‘very sad’ to hear of the news but was hopeful for another event later this year and it would now be taking part in the Lincoln 10k race event.
