A retired Skegness couple are celebrating after winning the ‘world’s greatest dog show’ with their rare breed pet.

Sandra and Alan Haywood took victory at Crufts recently with Riley, their two year old German pinscher bitch.

“I’ve always wanted to go to Crufts and last year was our first year so it was a really nice feeling to win this time round,” said Sandra.

The Haywoods, who used to own the Ivydene Hotel on Drummond Road, travelled to Birmingham’s NEC Arena with hundreds of other dog-lovers hoping to impress the judges with their pedigree pooches.

Sandra says Riley, like most German pinschers, can be a ‘little unruly’ and required a strict training regime along with lots of loving care and attention to stay show-ready.

However, when his turn came to take centre stage, Riley and Sandra dispelled their nerves and outshone all the competition.

They had previously qualified by winning a championship show in Leeds last year and have already secured their place at next year’s Crufts with a separate success.

Sandra, who is also Skegness Art Group’s chairman has recommended other dog-lovers to visit the show either as competitors or spectators.

“It’s a really nice event and a great atmosphere,” she said.
