Relief for Skegness holidaymakers as rail services return to normal on East Coast mainline

A scene of chaos for commuters yesterday at Peterborough train station. Normal services have now resumed.

Services on the East Coast mainline have returned to normal this morning, after 36 hours of travel chaos caused by damaged overhead wiring.

On Tuesday night wire came down on the major arterial route just south of St Neots.

The resulting damage played havoc with rail services between Peterborough and King’s Cross in London, with knock-on cancellations for a number of train services heading north from Peterborough and Grantham.

This meant rail-going holidaymakers travelling north or south after leaving Skegness were faced with severe delays, cancellations and replacement bus services for much of yesterday (Wednesday).

However the repairs are now complete and, as of 9.30am this morning, Network Rail were reporting that normal service had resumed.

“On the evening of Tuesday, February 19, a dewirement occurred at Little Barford, just south of St Neots,” said a spokesperson on the national Rail Enquiries site.

“Due to the severity of the incident, over a kilometre of overhead cabling needed to be replaced.

“The lines between Peterborough and Biggleswade have now reopened. All four railway lines can now be used... a normal service is expected to run today [on East Coast, First Hull Trains and Grand Central trains].

“East Coast and First Hull Trains tickets valid for travel yesterday (February 20) will be valid today (Thursday).
