East Midlands Trains is warning rail passengers to expect delays as a result of the gale-force winds currently battering the UK.

Wind speeds of up to 95mph have been reported in places, and a storm surge in the North Sea has sparked severe warnings and mass evacuations in some communities, mostly in East Anglia.

The rail franchise says it is running a normal timetable, but obstructions on lines caused by the winds are delaying many services.

A spokesperson said: “East Midlands Trains are running a normal timetable today. However trains on all routes are being delayed. Passengers are advised to check before they travel.

“Passengers with tickets dated for today will be accepted on Friday, December 6.

“Trains on the Grantham to Sleaford, Lincoln Central to Newark North Gate, Shirebrook to Worksop, Lincoln to Swinderby and Derby to Chesterfield routes are also being delayed due to obstructions on the line,” they added.
