Rail chaos for holidaymakers travelling via the East Coast mainline to reach Skegness

Rail travellers and half-term holidaymakers using the East Coast mainline to reach Skegness are facing major disruption today (Wednesday) after overhead wire problems.
The travel chaos has been caused by problems with overhead wires at St Neots.
It has resulted in severe disruption between Peterborough and King’s Cross, although the cancellations are also impacting on people travelling north from Grantham, where the Skegness Poacher Line connects with the mainline.
However, rail services between Skegness and Nottingham are operating as normal and there are currently no reported delays on the Poacher Line itself.
Disruption on the east coast mainline is so severe that as of 9.30am East Coast Trains were advising passengers travelling south of Peterborough to travel tomorrow “if possible”.
In a Tweet the rail firm said: “Anyone travelling to/from stations south of P’borough inc. King’s Cross advised to travel 2moro if possible. Tickets 4 2day will b ok 2 use.”
The disruption is affecting many service providers including East Coast Trains and First Capital Connect.
Bus replacement services are in operation for many services south of Peterborough, and warnings are that journey times will be extended by “up to 60 minutes”.
A spokesperson for National Rail said “a replacement bus service will run between Peterborough and London Kings Cross” on some providers.
They added that “a very limited [East Coast Trains] train service is able to run between London Kings Cross and Peterborough via Cambridge, running non-stop between London and Peterborough. These services are likely to be very busy.”
Limited services will continue to be the order of the day after midday and East Coast ticket holders are being advised to travel on their booked services.
“Passengers with tickets for cancelled services are advised to travel on the service immediately before or after their booked service,” said the spokesperson.
Anyone travelling is also asked to check the online journey planner at www.nationalrail.co.uk before travelling.
