Premier Inn plans for Skegness unveiled

Developers who want to bring an 80-bed Premier Inn to Skegness have gone home happy to have been met with '˜50 per cent support' for their project.

Richard Morton, director of KCS, attended a public exhibition in the resort and said: “Until now all we had were the views of the Save Our Foreshore Group,

“After our survey we can say whereas 50 per cent think it’s the wrong location, the other 50 are asking ‘how quickly can it be done?’

“We especially got support from local businesses, not necessarily hotels, who were more receptive to the argument of investment, new people and big brands.

“We will have the results of the survey in a short time and are on the programme of moving things forward.”

Crowds had started to gather outside the stand next to Tower Gardens even before it officially opened on Thursday afternoon. The public exhibition presented the first glimpse of what the hotel, with Brewers Fayre and drive-thru KFC, would look like.

KCS Developments is proposing to make a multi-million pound investment in the new development and create ‘90’ all-year jobs across the busineses should it be granted planning permission.

Mr Morton said: “In the design we have tried to be sympathetic and respectful with the surroundings. The front is minimum width so as not to obscure the view, which has been one of the arguments.

“The important thing to remember is the development will bring national brands to Skegness which has to bring benefits to the wider economy. We are listening to what people are saying and hope to submit plans to ELDC by the summer, with completion date by the end of 2017.

“Meanwhile we have given permission for the site to be used during carnival week.”

One resident who went along to look at the plans was Derek Cole, who runs Sunshine Gifts in Ingoldmells. He said: “I think Premier would be good for Skegness and if that means Pier Field then so be it.

“There is definitely a need for an 80-bed hotel for conferences. Other resorts such as Scarborough have them. We should go for it.”

Brian Brookes of Ingoldmells said: “I think it’s excellent. Bring it on. When you go to Great Yarmouth the first thing you see is the Premier Inn. It brings more people.”
