TWO bundles of fur are set to take on one of the most important jobs a dog can do, as the siblings embark on the role of guiding the deaf.
Charity-spirited labrador breeder Jane Moore, from Skegness, thought she would like one new puppy to join her family and other dogs Luna and Zenta but decided that two of the litter could be given to a vital charity.
“I’ve always wanted another dog and thought Luna could have her first litter and some could be given to charity and others sold or gifted,” said Jane.
The family were blessed with six puppies in the early hours, three black, two chocolate brown and one yellow which came as a surprise as a mixed litter is said to be quite rare.
Now seven weeks on, Jane is excited for what the future will hold for the two little ones going to the charity.
“I know these puppies will have a great life as well as the other ones and that is what’s important to me. I can’t give a lot of money to charity but what I can do is give these two beautiful dogs so they can help a deaf person or family for many years to come.”
The brave pups set off last Thursday for their new career with Hearing Dogs For Deaf People, two were sold the same day, one Jane is keeping and the final puppy has been given to a friend.
“I just thought it might be a nice thing to do and I know what wonderful work the charity does and how these dogs can be very important,” added Jane.
Hearing Dogs for Deaf People was launched at Crufts in 1982 and is now a world-leader in training hearing dogs to alert deaf recipients to important sounds and danger signals.
The two puppies will now be travelling north to be homed with their dog socialisers for a year. They will then embark on five months of training before being paired with a deaf owner.
A spokesperson said: “We rely on the support of the public and this kind of generosity is a fantastic example of how people can help change the life of a deaf person.”
