Paul’s Top of the Pile after 25 years

A family firm in Skegness has paid tribute to a ‘loyal, dedicated and hardworking’ employee who has served the company for more than 25 years.
Top of the Pile Quality Carpets presented long-serving carpet fitter Paul Pycroft with a tablet computer in celebration of his 25 years at the company on Wednesday.
Paul, who has overcome disabilities to learn his trade, has been praised by his sister-in-law, company secretary Julie Pycroft.
“I think he has done remarkably well, especially with his disability and deafness, which can make it a lot harder to train somebody,” she said.
“When he came to us he was only 24-years-old, so he has been here longer than he had been alive when he came to us.
“He is very dedicated - apart from some time off recently when he had open heart surgery, he has hardly ever taken a day off sick.
“He is very popular with our customers, with whom he has built up a good rapport.”
The long serving employee says he has enjoyed working for the company and is grateful for the kind gift he was given.
He said: “I enjoy working here and I like getting out and about visiting customers and I didn’t want a gold watch so I’m pleased with my gift.”
Paul started at the Heath Road based company, just two years after it was set up by his brother John, who has also applauded his dedicated approach to his work.
“Paul has been a reliable worker for 25 years, never complained, never been late and hardly had any time off,” he said.
In an age when a ‘job for life’ is increasingly rare, Julie believes the family values, central to Top of the Pile’s ethos, has helped retain long serving workers and a loyal customer base.
She said: “I think people like to deal with a family run business because you tend to get a better service.”
Paul and his coworkers have also planned a celebratory meal at the Vine Hotel later this month.
