Novel hopes for contest winner
George Cargill beng presented with his certificate for winning Skegness Library's short story compeition.
AN ASPIRING author has found the confidence needed to write his own novel after winning a recent short story competition.
George Cargill, 51, won Skegness Library’s competition with his ‘poignant and moving tale of love’ entitled The Spirit of Gibraltar Point.
George (pictured receiving his award) said: “I was absolutely over the moon when I heard I had won. I was at work when they rang and at first I thought it was about an overdue book.
“When they told me I had won it felt like I was 18 again.”
The Skegness Water Leisure Park employee was a passionate writer at school but it was not until he took a creative writing course that he rediscovered his love for the art.
When he learnt about the competition he decided to enter his ghostly love story about the spirit of a Skegness man, killed in the 1953 floods, and the reunion with the girl he left behind nearly 60 years later. Having taken the top sport in the adult section of the competition he now hopes to write a full length novel about a Scottish man in the 1860s who travels to America to become a gunslinger.
“I think it’s spot on that the library has organised this, there’s a lot of people out there who can write but don’t have the confidence.
“Having won, this competition has given me the key to give novel writing a go.”
George is now looking to start a creative writing workshop at the library. If you are interested call him on 01754 228027.
