New guides celebrate region’s rich aviation history

East Lindsey Aviation Heritage launches next month.

A new guide about East Lindsey’s rich aviation history, which launches next month, has been hailed as ‘fantastic’ resource for visitors and residents alike.

East Lindsey Aviation Heritage, produced by the district council, looks into the fascinating history of the region’s numerous RAF stations and former airfields, including East Kirkby.

Aviation historian Howard Heeley, who wrote the guide, said: “I was delighted to be asked by East Lindsey District Council to undertake the work to research and compile an aviation heritage guide.

“Whilst visiting the various sites to take photographs and check details, I was really struck by the sense of history and emotion that still connects the sites, with the personnel that served there and in some cases that still serve there.

“Hopefully the new aviation heritage guide will encourage people to visit these locations for themselves - by doing this I am sure they will also come to appreciate the important role that East Lindsey’s airfield sites played in aviation, locally, nationally and internationally.”

Mr Heeley will be hosting a talk, coinciding with the guide’s launch on Tuesday, March 5, from 7pm at the Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa - which once homed ‘The Dambusters’ whose legendary mission is regarded as one of the world’s most daring bombing raids.

ELDC’s portfolio holder for economic regeneration Coun Craig Leyland hopes the guide will support the district’s aviation tourism industry and reacquire its residents with some of their fascinating local history.

He said: “I am thrilled that the district council has been able to produce this booklet, which highlights the importance of our aviation heritage.

“The booklet will be a fantastic guide, not only for visitors to the area but for our local residents who may not be aware of our local aviation history.

“I’d like to thank Howard Heeley for his work on the guide that will be appreciated by many people for years to come.”

Following the launch, guides will be available from tourist information centres and to download from www.visitskegnessandmablethorpe.com.
