Mum saves school prom in Skegness for twins and friends

Teenage twins were so upset when a school prom was cancelled their mum set about organising another one for them and their friends.

Skegness Academy students Aliscia and Mia Jackson had already bought their posh frocks for the A Night At The Movies event that should have taken place at the North Shore Hotel last week.

But when it looked like there wasn’t going to be a happy ending for leavers after not enough tickets were sold, mum Irene Jackson stepped in.

When the Skegness Standard caught up with Ms Jackson she was making glittering movie reel tickets and stars to decorate the room at the North Shore Hotel, where the event will now go ahead on Tuesday, June 14.

She said: “My girls have had to stay on in education until they are 18 and I just thought they and their friends should have a celebration for all of the hard work they have done. They deserve the best prom they can have.

“When I was at school we had a regular disco and on the day we left the DJ just said ‘goodbye to all those who are leaving’. I wanted more for my girls and their friends.

“I’ve put my own money into getting things started and have been busy making the tickets and stars to decorate the room.

“My friend Anne Burgin has offered to do the tables but any help will be welcome. We’re planning a Prom and Comedy Awards because there is so much talent in the school and are looking for donations of prizes.

“There will be a karaoke machine but if anyone would like to provide entertainment I’d love to hear from them.”

Skegness Academy headteacher Ben Pearce said: “This is the first time students have actively shown they would like a prom and we wish them success.”

Aliscia said: “We were really surprised and upset when we heard the prom had been cancelled. But hopefully now we will get to wear our dresses after all.”

Tickets are £20 and include a buffet.
Tom Hindle, manager at the Northshore Hotel, said: “We are delighted a prom is going to be held after all and are happy to support it. We hope it gets the numbers it needs and that it will be a fabulous occasion.”
