A former Skegness student was able to join tens of thousands of followers to celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela at a memorial service last week.

Luke Farrell, who is studying for his masters at the University of Cape Town, journeyed to the FNB stadium in Soweto, South Africa.

“The mood was jubilant inside a deceptively full stadium - with the sheltered inner concourse of the lower levels packed full with people seeking respite from the rain,” Luke said.

“For the entire day, struggle songs echoed around a stadium largely clad in the black, green, yellow colours of the African National Congress,” he added.

The week of the former President Mandela’s death, Luke’s father Paul had been over in Johannesburg for business, and both men paid their respects at his home the following morning by laying flowers.

The 23-year-old student also extended his trip to be part of the momentous occasion and is now back in Skegness with family. Luke, who once attended Skegness Grammar School, was able to witness US President Barack Obama give a speech.
