Jobs created as Yorkshire Trading Company takes over Skegness Woolworths

Wednesday, 9.46am - WOOLWORTHS will no longer stand empty in Lumley Road, Skegness, as the huge store is being filled by the Yorkshire Trading Company.

And it means up to 20 jobs will be created for local people.

It is the latest piece of good news for the town's shopping street which has seen a number of its empty shops filled during the past few weeks.

The Yorkshire Trading Company, which has a shop in Louth market place, has taken over several Woolworths units, including Skegness and Sleaford.

Debbie Bath, of YTC, said: "We were delighted to be able to take on Skegness. Apart from the fact it is a lively busy town on a very attractive part of the coast, it fits in with our means of operation ideally.

"We have always traded well in market towns and seaside resorts.

"With the trend for high rents and rates in the high street today, a great many specialist shops, for example, ironmongers and haberdashers, are forced to close down, however we are able to provide those items under one roof for our customers without them having to trek to large towns and cities."

Work has already started to get the shop, which will sell everything from household and gardening equipment, to clothing, gifts and sweets, open within the next few weeks.

The company says it only recruits locally so all its staff, from management to Saturday workers, will come from this area and it is thought there will be between 12-20 jobs.

Lumley Road has looked bleak for months as more and more shops laid empty but, lately, the area has enjoyed a boost with many being filled.

Even the Cancer Research shop and Heron store, which have been empty for more than a year, have been taken.

Chairman of Skegness and District Chamber of Commerce Glenis Brown said: "I'm absolutely delighted the Yorkshire Trading Company is coming. Woolworths is such a loss. It's good people will have somewhere else to wander around.

"We're delighted the shops are filling up and we're really quite lucky that they are. We hope they keep being taken."
