Hospice talk at U3A

THE work of St Barnabas Hospice was the subject at the Skegness U3A meeting at the Crown Hotel recently.

Guest speaker Ruth O’Melia, the community liaison officer, said that the hospice, based in Lincoln, is 30 years old this year.

There is also a ‘hospice at home’ service which covers Skegness, Boston, Sutton on Sea and Mablethorpe as well as other areas throughout the county. In addition there are several day care centres and family support services.

There are 23 shops in the county raising funds as well as a weekly lottery which all help towards the cost of running the hospice.

St Barnabas also has links with Macmillan and Marie Curie.

Ruth was thanked by the Chairman Norman Barker and the Knitting and Crochet Group presented her with two knitted blankets for use by patients.

During the business session a minute’s silence was observed for founder member Eileen Farmer who died recently, and for Pam Tassell who had died the previous week.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 17 at the Crown Hotel, Skegness at 9.30am when the speaker will be Chris Manning on Lincolnshire Deer.
