Group goes wild to raise record funds

Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust has been presented with a cheque for £2,800 by committee members of the Spilsby Area Group.

The cheque was accepted by Dave Bromwich, the Trust’s head of reserves at the group’s annual meeting on Thursday evening.

Chairman Stef Round said: “We think this is the largest amount that we have ever raised in one year and I have to thank my committee and everyone who supports us for their efforts.”

There are 280 members in the group who are passionate about preserving wildlife and plants, especially as they have a nature reserve just up the road at Snipe Dales.

However, soon residents and visitors to Lincolnshire will see the fruits of members’ labours growing along verges across the county, through a trust project called ‘Life on the Verge’.

Member Denis Chandler said: “We are very fortunate to have a local reserve but our work goes much further and supports the 100 reserves in the county. At the moment the trust is trying join them together to make corridors for wildlife so they don’t die out.

“The trust is making them in hedgerows and along verges so wild birds and plant life can travel.”

The money was raised by the Spilsby Group in a range of ways, including a sponsored head and beard shave by committee member Phil Dixon.

The group also received donations from the Spilsby Lions and the Spilsby Inner Wheel, which nominated the trust as its charity for the year.

Paul Learoyd, chief executive of Lincolnshire Trust, said: “This is an amazing donation by such an active group supported by the wider community.”
