Gravy fun raises £1,000s
A fun scene during the gravy fundraiser.
BRAVE bartenders bathed in gravy to help save lives at sea last week.
The Oasis Bar in Ingoldmells raised a four figure sum for the RNLI through its fourth annual fundraiser on Thursday.
Customers paid to vote for who they wanted to see submerged the longest.
Bar manager Sharon Elsey was the unlucky favourite, made to take the plunge for 15 messy minutes.
“It was torture,” she said.
“I did a sky-dive last year and would rather have done that again.
“Knowing it was for charity was the main thing that kept us going.”
To make the unpleasant challenge even more miserable, Sharon was also made to wear a bright pink swimming costume and wig - her most hated colour.
Two of her colleagues were also covered in the savoury sauce for five and 10 minutes while being pelted with buckets of cold water.
Such torturous treatment in the work place could be considered grounds for an employment tribunal, if it weren’t for the fact that they chose the challenge themselves.
“We’ve got no one to blame but ourselves,” said Sharon.
The bar has hosted fundraisers for the RNLI over each of the previous four years, with last year’s event raising more than £2,500.
Sharon said: “We choose the lifeboats because we are so near the sea and it makes sense to support them, especially when there are so many silly people getting themselves into trouble.”
More than 200 customers turned out for the event, which also featured a variety of top quality singers and a fundraising raffle with prizes donated by local businesses.
Sharon added: “I’d like to say a big thank you to everybody who took part, donated to the raffle and gave us money, which was all gratefully received.”
A presentation to the RNLI of the total funds raised will be taking place at the bar tonight (Wednesday) at 8pm.
